Cornel West

Q: Any information about the speaker, Cornel West, who spoke on Campus within the past 8 years.
A: Philosopher, America's "public intellectual", author, lecturer, distinguished Princeton Professor Cornel West began his speech, titled "Restoring Hope" at Sexson Auditorium of Pasadena City College on December 5th, 2003. The Cross Cultural Center and Black Student Alliance were hosting the event.
West emphasized the distinction between hope and optimism: "Hope enacts the stance of the participant who actively struggles against the evidence in order to change the deadly tides of wealth inequality, group xenophobia, and personal despair" and "Optimism adopts the role of the spectator who surveys the evidence in order to infer that things are going to get better". Speaking about race in America he said "you're actually talking about what does it mean to be human..."
